Zaphod Beeblebrox 2 (Ottawa, ON) • Opening for Mike Watt and the Pair of Pliers ($12 Advance)

Steve's Comments

According to Lesia Manchulenko, who has seen all of our shows so far (I think), our best-sounding show to date; thanks to Paul Hogan for his usual work as sound tech.

We played well, I experimented a little more with dynamics and tried not to play as much so the choruses would sound fuller in relation to the verses. The crowd was very enthusiastic, there were even a few calls for an encore at the end of our set! Unfortunately due to time constraints we were only able to play for about 40 minutes but that just forced us to rock even harder!

We chatted with Mike Watt and his bandmates a little bit before and after the show, they are all very down-to-earth guys. We forced them to pose with us for a cheesy photo and gave them Laguna shirts. I wonder if we'll show up in their tour diaries as "the most butt-kissing band we've encountered in a while". :-)

All in all a great show made better by the fact that our long-time friend Eric Altman (former Jimmy George drummer) was in town for the first time in over two years. Thanks to everyone who gave us such an enthusiastic response.

UPDATE

We did eventually end up in Mike Watt's Tour Diaries, here are some quotes:

"the gig goes good. laguna is cool and the fact that the guys were very cool people draws me into their personable style all the more... the laguna's give us t-shirts which we seem to be wearing a lot after gigs (the dry after-gig wear)." - Vince. "my whole body aches bad but I'm tired and konk deep despite the openers blasting away. I like the way their sound felt through the deck... the cats in the opening band take a picture w/me, good vibes all over. I even accept a t-shirt they give me which is a trip cuz I mainly just like shirts w/buttons. two pockets too, I'm one particular fucking idiot." - Mike Watt. From the next day's diary (their Toronto show): "not the liars so much or laguna. the liars were more like the sonics and laguna kind of like...well, bands I hear when I hear other peoples radios...I have to admit I'm not up to date on contemporary rock/alt/pop." - Vince.

Thanks for being so cool, Mike Watt & Pliers. We had a great time too.
