Duke of Somerset, The (Ottawa, ON)
Opening for Toque (Free)
Our first show. We were nervous. We sat anxiously waiting for 10:30 to arrive, while I wrote set lists and cheat notes (I wasn't sure if I would remember all the lyrics, I wasn't sure if Dan and Rob would remember all the songs.)
It seemed odd that I would be nervous... I had played at the Duke at least 300 times and I knew Toque well, having designed their CD cover and having played in Jimmy George with George Jennings, the Toque bass player. But I hadn't been on stage since St. Patrick's Day, the final Jimmy George show, and I hadn't had the dubious task of singing most of the songs in a set since, well, a long time ago.
We played all originals except for Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac) and Rock and Roll All Nite (Kiss). Cheesy covers both, but fun songs to play and being a new band, people like to hear something they know.
We were worried about not having enough material, but we plowed through the set without
much noodling around and still managed to be on stage for over 50 minutes! I tried to talk a bit in between songs but Rob kept starting songs right as I started to talk. It may be better off that way: I'm sure I wouldn't have said anything very witty...
After the show, I was glad that most people I spoke with actually remembered specific songs... different people individually mentioned "Paramount", "Too Slow, Slow", "Potential", "Ride the Polaris Wave", "All Time Low" and "Feeling California" as being songs they liked. If it had all been a blur or if people had just said "it was good" I would have been disappointed... I think it's a good sign that people seemed to be distinguishing songs, even on first listen. There may be hope.
