Determine The Operating System (OS) of a given Web Site / Web Server

Category: Web
Category: Utilities

Sometimes it is necessary to determine the operating system on the web server hosting a given site, for example to determine whether a site will likely support ASP pages.

To determine the type of operating system a given web server / web site is using, it is simply a matter of sending an HTTP request and checking the headers which are returned by the server. 90% of the time or more, the headers will contain accurate information, but it is possible for the headers to be wrong or completely omitted.

The kind folks at NetCraft have provided a handy utility to check these headers and return the information in a user-friendly format. Just click on the link below and enter any domain such as tenvolt.com into the "What's that site running?..." box near the top left of the page.
